Childhood as Memory is a series of images and a staple-bound photography book. The work was mainly photographed in Shenzhen, Guangdong, and Chaling, Hunan: one is the city where I grew up, shaped by speed, architecture, and change; the other is my father’s and grandparents’ hometown, connected to family roots, rural space, and a slower way of life.

The photographs record streets, interiors, night scenes, stairways, water, fireworks, and domestic corners. They do not try to reconstruct a complete childhood. Instead, they treat ordinary traces as fragments of memory. Digital photography, film, and darkroom prints are brought together to present different experiences of time: quick storage, waiting, uncertainty, and handmade marks.

In a contemporary context where images are produced, saved, and forgotten in large quantities, this book invites viewers to turn the pages, pause, look back, and build their own connections between photographs. Childhood is not fixed in a single image. It is formed and changed through repeated looking and small gaps. The work is not only about remembering childhood, but also about looking carefully at what remains, and thinking about how the past continues to shape the present through images.
